Putting the Town Back into Kent Town

5000 + Competition

Kent Town Masterplan

___

5000 + was a Masterplanning Competition for an Integrated Design Strategy for Inner Adelaide that sought a design-led project for the redesign, renewal and reactivation of inner Adelaide. It asked how the future of inner Adelaide might work based upon a people-first approach.

Our response was a community driven master plan that focussed on remaking Kent Town based on place. We formulated our master plan based upon the programmatic introduction of new social interactions. Whilst ultimately unsuccessful, the project allowed us to demonstrate our talents at master-planning whilst learning more about Adelaide's most inner suburb.

Our entry was pitched as follows:

Life. Vibrancy. Pleasure. Dynamism. Engagement and Challenge.

These are the urban attributes of the 21st Century. In many ways, Kent Town lacks these vital qualities, instead remaining trapped by its past and shackled by the traffic sewers that form its boundaries. Kent Town is populated by just 1250 residents, and with many of those boarding at a college, this means that Kent Town is a great location without a life.

Kent Town: a place to eat, play and love

Kent Town: a place to eat, play and love

As it stands, Kent Town it is not a place to eat, play, love.

Instead, it's a set of structures briefly glimpsed and then bypassed by thousands of commuters as they journey to work and back home again. For them, Kent Town would be better bulldozed and transformed into a bitumen landscape of express lanes, roundabouts and priority car access.

How do we take that potential and bring it into reality? We want to force Kent Town to look in the mirror.

We start by making it a place to live. Let's see the population grow to 5,000 persons by 2022, with much of that growth taking place sooner rather than later. Let’s put people back into a working landscape and keep those businesses thriving and active, now and into the future.

Let's tame the car within the suburb. Let's control their speed, their direction and their parking and help people find other ways to connect to the City

Let’s make it a place to eat. With community and edge in profusion we will see Kent Town transformed as a place of long lunches, lingering suppers and fusion cuisine.

Let’s make it a place to play by preserving what is wonderful about Kent Town. Let’s maintain the heritage homes and precincts, but place them within a larger community that has energy, connection and life. Let’s create spaces where people meet, flirt, discuss and languish.

If all the world is a stage, Kent Town has the best seats in Adelaide. Let's make it a place that we love.
